Welcome to Northeast Oklahoma, where Historic Route 66 offers one of its most unique stretches. Here, classic Americana, rich Native American history, and the sparkling waters of Grand Lake O' the Cherokees converge. This guide will take you through the must-see stops directly on the route in Miami, Afton, and Vinita, and show you the some side-trip destinations just a few miles off the beaten path.
Get ready to drive on the original "Ribbon Road," see incredible historic theaters, eat at legendary diners, and discover the unexpected beauty of Oklahoma's lake country.
The incredible thing about route 66 as a road trip now,
as well as when originally traveled, is the diversity of things to do that appeal to people of all ages.
Although many of the route 66 magazines feature things to do and
places to go right along route 66, when we originally traveled it in the 70s, we would leave route 66 for the attractions that were as far as 50 miles away.
The trick to a road trip is to make a plan of you'd like to see but leave enough time so that if you find something interesting along the way you can put it into your itinerary without messing everything up.
If you don't see it all, seems like a good excuse for another road trip!
There are 2 sections of the original Route 66 in northeast Oklahoma that can be driven on:
The northern section is easy to find. From downtown Miami, continue south on hwy 125 past the fairgrounds. When hwy 125 turns left, continue straight. Be sure your car has good shocks as this section of road is rough and narrow.
The southern section of the ribbon Road is 9-ft wide a road ends at US 69,
just north of Narcissa (E140 if you're traveling 66 eastbound). For westbound rt 66 travelers, turn so on US 69 and drive thru Narcissa, then watch for the NE Technology Center. Turn right here, and shortly the road narrows to one lane.
